In 2018, GARMENT manufacturer need to fulfill bluesign® criteria to label products as bluesigN®

The bluesign® system is a comprehensive production control system designed to limit the impact of textile manufacturing on human health and the environment. It is based on five principles of sustainability: resource productivity, consumer safety, air emission, water emission and occupational health & safety. The bluesign® system covers the entire supply chain; from the spinning mills, chemical companies, and dyehouses to the garment manufacturers and brands. Several premium brands and fabric suppliers have already joined the bluesign® system to be part of a responsible textile industry. 

We have asked Christian Dreszig from bluesign technologies about the history, the here and now, and the future for bluesign®.” When bluesign technologies started in 2000, not many brands or end users were interested in our services – they didn’t really have the environmental issues in mind. But in 2003, the outdoor brands became interested when their consumers started asking questions about how garments for the outdoor sports were produced.” Christian explains, ”They considered nature to be their ”hobby room,” and wanted to know what the impact of the production of garments was. So the outdoor industry was concerned quite early – much sooner than the fashion industry.”

Christian continues, ”Today many garment manufacturers in Asia have joined the bluesign® system – including LTP's factory in Vietnam. But in Europe, only three garment manufacturers are bluesign® certified. LTP is one of them, and they are the only garment manufacturer within the functional garment industry.”

Very often, garment manufacturers operate as a sourcing company for the different brands and with the bluesign® system they can provide tools and assistance to source sustainable material and components through the whole supply chain. 

Today it is not required that the brands use certified garment manufacturers, but from 2018 the garment manufacturers have to fulfill the bluesign® criteria for the brands to label their product as a bluesign® product.

LTP has been bluesign® system partner since 2012 in Lithuania and 2014 with its Vietnam factory

”LTP has been an early adopter fulfilling criteria that are not required for the bluesign® system yet and that is uncommon in the industry.” Christian points out, ”Usually, the brands are drivers; if they have adopted to a responsible way of thinking, the garment manufacturers just follow what the brands ask for. The fact that LTP has become a bluesign® system partner and meet higher CSR standards than required is demonstrating that LTP is very concerned about the environment and their employees.”

According to Christian, there is a clear vision for bluesign®; ”bluesign® is not a standard. We are a service provider to the textile industry, and we provide knowledge, to give the industry the ability to improve themselves. Our vision is that one-day bluesign® will not be needed anymore because the entire textile industry produces in an environmentally friendly way.”

If brands want to label their products as bluesign® product all relevant production steps have to be done by bluesign® system partner companies.
